ORDER OF OPERATIONS
In math there is a hierarchy, or order, in which to do calculations. Exponents are before multiplication and division, which are equals. Multiply and divide comes before addition and subtraction, which are also equals. Of course, parentheses may over-ride the normal order because you must first calculate the value inside of the grouping symbols. How to remember all of this? Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction or PEMDAS).
