ASSERTION

A belief that something is true because it is self-evident, something that can be assumed as the basis for an hypothesis. One can make the assertion that 2 plus 2 equals 4 because it is self-evident that the value of 2 is 2.

An assertion is something that is felt to be true, but has not been proven.
